About Eusociality

Eusociality is an independent, advertising-supported site about the biology of cooperation — the ants, bees, wasps, and termites that build colonies instead of living alone, and the eusocial and cooperatively breeding mammals, like naked mole-rats and meerkats, that do something similar in their own way. This isn’t run by a research institution, and it isn’t affiliated with any university, museum, or scientific body it happens to write about.

The gap between the idea and the number

Kin selection and eusociality are easy enough to describe in a paragraph: relatives share genes, so helping a relative reproduce can spread your own genes too, and under the right conditions that favours workers who never reproduce themselves. What’s harder is turning that idea into an actual number for a specific case — how related two individuals really are, whether a particular act of altruism clears the bar Hamilton’s rule sets for it, how big a colony’s worker force will get by the end of the season, or what a returning forager was actually saying with her waggle run. Textbooks give you the theory. They rarely hand you a calculator.

What the tools are built to solve

The Coefficient of Relatedness Calculator and the Hamilton’s Rule Calculatorhandle the kinship math directly: the first reads off Wright’s coefficient of relatedness (r) for any family relationship, including the r = 0.75 that haplodiploid sisters in bees, ants, and wasps share with each other — a number that comes up constantly in explanations of why eusociality evolved in those groups. The second tests rB > C, Hamilton’s rule itself, by taking the relatedness, benefit, and cost you enter and showing whether kin selection favours the act and what its inclusive-fitness effect works out to.

The Waggle Dance Decodertackles a different kind of problem: reading a honeybee’s communication rather than its demographics. The waggle-run duration gives the distance to the food source, and the dance angle measured against the sun’s azimuth gives a compass bearing — the decoder does the conversion so you can check a real observation against the numbers.

Beyond the calculators

The Museum of Social Speciesis a set of galleries on the animals that live in colonies and cooperate to survive: social insects, mound-building termites, eusocial and cooperative mammals, and cooperation elsewhere in the animal kingdom. Every entry, image, and fact in it is drawn from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, not written from scratch, so it’s a starting point for further reading rather than an original research source. What this is and isn’t

Every number these tools produce is an estimate built from a standard formula and whatever figures you enter — not a measurement, and not professional biological, veterinary, or pest-control advice. Real colonies vary by species, environment, and season in ways a calculator can’t see, so treat the output as a starting point for understanding, and check anything that matters against primary literature or a qualified expert. This site runs on advertising, which is how it stays free with no account or sign-up required; it has no connection to any brand, standard, or authority whose name might come up in its content.
